Why Jonathan David's wage demands could hinder Premier League clubs pursuing free transfer this summer

‎Lille striker Jonathan David is set to be one of the most sought-after free agents in the upcoming summer transfer window, with his contract expiring at the season’s end. However, his high wage demands could complicate interest from major Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Liverpool.

‎The Canadian international has made it clear he will not be renewing his deal with the Ligue 1 side, making him available for a free transfer in the summer. According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, as reported by Get French Football News, David's demands could deter several suitors. Specifically, Premier League giants, such as Manchester United and Liverpool, may reconsider their pursuit due to his substantial financial requirements.
‎Earlier reports, including from The Daily Mail, highlighted that up to seven Premier League clubs had shown interest in David, including Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham, Newcastle, and Tottenham. However, Tavolieri’s latest revelations suggest that these clubs could be put off by the significant cost involved in signing the 25-year-old.
‎David is reportedly requesting a £7.5 million gross annual salary, along with a £12.5 million signing bonus. Additionally, agent fees and other commission costs would push the total cost of the deal to over £28 million, despite David's status as a free agent.
‎While Premier League clubs may be hesitant, Serie A sides Juventus and Inter Milan are still keen to secure David’s signature. Juventus had previously shown interest in him during the January transfer window, and they, along with Inter Milan, remain interested in signing the striker for next season.
‎David is enjoying a stellar season at Lille, having netted 23 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions. He is on track to surpass his personal best of 26 goals in a single season, a feat he achieved in both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns. His next match will see Lille face Lyon on Saturday. SA
